Former Future Presidents
While President McCarthy is the first female President of the United States of America, she's by no means the only woman to aspire to the office. Here are some of her predecessors:
Victoria Woodhull
The first woman to run for President of the United States (1872), Woodhull ran as a candidate of the Equal Rights Party.
Shirley Chrisholm
Under the slogan "Unbought and unbossed," Chrisholm was the first black woman elected to Congress. She ran for President in the 1972 Democratic primary.
Hillary Clinton
Former Secretary of State (2009-2013) and former First Lady (1993-2001) Hillary Rodham Clinton ran for President under the Democratic Party in 2016.
